Developing a Mode Ii Fracture Model for Composite Laminates
نویسندگان
چکیده
Delamination is a critical form of failure in composite laminates which is partitioned into a combination of three pure modes namely; opening, shearing and tearing (modes I, II and III respectively). Each fracture mode contributes to the total energy required for delamination growth, due to a combination of the different damage mechanisms that occur under each mode 1-2 . To formulate reliable mixed-mode delamination growth criteria it is necessary to develop physically based models that incorporate these damage mechanisms. This paper focuses on the mechanisms associated with mode II using a novel macro-scale experimental model.

Mixed-mode I/II Interlaminar Fracture of CF/PEI Composite Material
Failures in composite materials occur mainly due to interlaminar fracture, also called delamination, between laminates. This indicates that characterizing interlaminar fracture toughness is the most effective factor in the fracture of composite materials. This study reports investigation on mixed-mode interlaminar fracture behaviour in woven carbon fibre/polyetherimide (CF/PEI) thermoplastic co...
متن کاملInteraction of laminate damage and adhesive disbonding in composite scarf joints subjected to combined in-plane loading and impact
Impact tests were carried out on composite laminates and composite scarf repairs, while both were subjected to in-plane loading with tensile pre-strain levels up to 5000 microstrain. The results show that pre-straining of the composite laminates has no noticeable influence on the size of the delamination area for the given impact energy of 8 J, which represents a typical barely-visible impact o...
متن کاملMode II delamination toughness of z-pinned laminates
Mode II delamination toughness of z-pin reinforced composite laminates is investigated using finite element (FE) method. The z-pin pullout process is simulated by the deformation and breakage of non-linear springs. A critical shear stress criterion based on linear elastic fracture mechanics is used to simulate crack growth in an end-notched-flexure (ENF) beam made of z-pinned laminates. The mod...

In this paper a new method to determine the fracture properties and strain energy release rate for Carbon- Polyester composite has been introduced. Fracture characteristics such as critical stress intensity factor and critical strain energy release rate for mode I, mode II and mixed mode loading were determined using Arcan type specimen. 130 layers of carbon fiber polyester woven composite wit...
